Need Some Coupon Clipping Motivation?!

Is it possible to feed a family of 6 on $4 a week?
Check out this video and let me know what you think!

I do apologize for my Follow Me Monday videos not being quite up to par with this!;)

I'm excited to watch this when I get home... I can't watch it while at work :(

You're welcome!

BTW- I like your follow me mondays better...at least your goals are achievable by us "common couponers"! (Also, I don't think I could live like her with all those papers around me and loaded in a closet! I could handle her stockpile though.) :)

Tax alone in my state would be more than $4.

That is amazing!!! And I think I'm doing a good job when I have $15 worth of coupons at the grocery store :)

What a motivating segment. Those of us that use coupons, shop the sales know just how much can be saved. Yes, it takes time but so does everything worthwhile. I love it and always get comments from fellow shoppers when they see how much I save.

Anonymous said...

oh my God! How did she do that? Items worth more than $200 for just a penny???????????
Anyways, we love you Collin. You are the one who helps us save a lot of money.

That was great! It makes me want to be more motiavated to save even more. Today @ Walmart I had $153 worth of grocries that I only paid $84 , not free but still a good savings.

Very inspiring video! Thanks for posting it and I still LOVE your Follow Me Monday installments the best!

I loved the video! The comments on there suprised me its seems people who dont know how to do what we do are so jealous. I mean seriously just bc we use coupons doesnt mean we dont get fresh stuff too. People dont use their brains lol.

Anonymous said...

WOW! I wish I could do that. Oh well, I've been perfectly happy saving either as much as I spend or more! As a family of 5 it can be hard. I do have to say though, I think it's funny to see "She feeds her family of 4 for less then $100 a week!" I feed my family of 5 for about $75 a week, it's a BAD week for us if we spend $100... lol.

Anonymous said...

Wow! I've never seen a closet full of Q's before! She's my hero :)

this was amazing! good motivation! i love your videos too!

I dont understand.....because you have to pay tax.

i have to say.....i love using coupons....but i cant ask for 4 quarters of fish....i would just use one coupon.

Anonymous said...

WOW!!
I do have to say , that not all store double. I am in an area that never doubles..

Anonymous said...

I am wondering how she get's away without paying any tax...CVS! You have to pay tax...maybe this is really old?

Fantastic job!

Anonymous said...

Yes motivating - but you give us the day to day tools that make the most of our money! So good for your karma! =]

Anonymous said...

Yeah, but they didn't show the cashier inspecting and questioning the coupons, the manager being called, the 20 minutes wait while everyone decides if you should really get that Sense & Spray for free...
;)
She's awesome and so are you!

Pilar said...

Gee, I wish I'd had a network film crew follow me around that dreaded Target today...maybe THEN the 3 idiots at Customer Service would understand their own coupon policy! (It all started with me showing them the Walgreen's ad for cereal...said they'd price match if I showed them an ad. I said that's we're looking at!!!) No wonder I'm going gray! I'm sure the cashier on the video just pushed all of them through without question...ah, intimidation! Colin, you're still my hero. You can get all the deals and still have the heart to share them with US! Thanks.

Not to burst any bubbles...but my stores don't seem to be that nice...there's always something that doesn't quite work, or beeps for me...I think I've got to learn in this whole process...geez!

I live in So. CA and thought I did great buying over 153. in groceries for less then $20.00 and that included milk, produce and 10 packages of jenny o ground turkey. I want to see them explain that you have to keep this up and work hard to get it to the point where you can d it you can't just walk in and do this the first week it took her a while to get there so don't get upset when you can't do it yet.

This is inspiring, but I think this this woman is very lucky. Like having seafood coupons that I've never seen, stacking multiple coupons, Shaw's giving you $ toward your next purchase, etc. And also her state must not tax coupons because MANY times my tax has been more than my subtotal. I'd love to see someone do this in CO!

LOL. I always laugh when I read other people's coupon stories! It makes me feel so much better about mine! It's really funny...after the fact, right? A couple of weeks ago, I was told that my coupons said, "one coupon per purchase" so I could only use one. I tried to explain the difference between a purchase and a transaction, but my poor cashier overseer (whatever they are called) acted like she was a brain surgeon, and I was telling her how to do surgery! I promise, i was nice! I even told her I didn't want her to be upset and have a bad day, but I'd used coupons in her store for years. Of course, she told me that wasn't possible, as this was their policy. *shrugs* I'll go back and do the same thing again, like I've done multiple times before. Sure makes for good stories, yeah?

Anonymous said...

I'd like to see more details from this transaction! One huge question I have is how many Shaw's store dollars did she use? (She mentions getting credits from previous transactions - this could account for her not having to pay any tax?) Also, how many sunday papers is she buying every week to stockpile all those coupons? That cost was not mentioned.
Seems like sketchy journalism... many details are left out!

Anonymous said...

Wow, that was unreal. And here I thought I was doing good saving $10 to $20 a week on my groceries. I must be doing something wrong. My family of 3 still spends a total of $100 each week.
Guess you're right anon, you've got to work up to that point. I'm still working on finding the home and beauty products for free. I'll work on the grocery part more intensly later. I agree that Collin's videos are more realistic.

Anonymous said...

One question since I am new to couponing is that if you use a coupon to purchase an item and that particular item has the "Peel off" which includes another discount, can you use that right away at that moment or do you have to wait till your next purchase. Any help is much appreciated. I may have more questions along the way as I start to discover new aspects of couponing.

Anonymous said...

Makes me want to cry when I see that! Thats incredible!!! I don't know how she does it lol..and I wonder if she's given any grief a the checkout like some of us do!

Loved it loved it! I'm gonna show my husband when he gets home!

Anonymous said...

my first thought is they must not be eating very healthy!

fran said...

She did really great. Don't forget, she only purchases items she has a coupon for, and her store doubles coupons, maybe even $1.00 coupons. A couple of our supermarkets double up to $1.00, so $.75 coupon will take off $1.50. I like when they have triple coupons...$2.25 off a $.75 coupon. Then they said something about coupons she earns from the store, she accumulates these, then uses a bunch at one time. I wonder if these are Catalina coupons or something special for her store only. I have been in the negative more than a few times, where I had to grab a candy bar to bring my total in the plus. I had coupons for some kind of cold cuts sold at Acme. I did what she did...I asked the deli person for the amount the coupon was. You can ask for the amount you want to spend on deli, instead of the weight.
When we get items like milk, bread, fruit, meat, etc., that's where our total increases...yes, there are coupons on these sometimes, but not always. She probably used those extra $5.00 coupons to pay for these items.

I do this all the time when I go shopping...when I buy a bag of apples, onions, potatoes, or anything that is pre-weighed, I take 2 or 3 bags and weigh them myself, and I buy the heaviest bag. I know this may sound cheap, but if you can get a 6 lb. bag of potatoes for the price of a 5 lb. bag, you're ahead of the game. I do this with a head of lettuce, mango, etc.

Don't get discouraged...to do something like this takes a long time. You are still saving money, and that's a good thing.

I've seen a coupon queen on a show, and she did really well also. She showed her receipt...she used a lot of coupons for free items, which will bring anybody's total down. One suggestion, when you do have a coupon for a free item, try to hold onto it to see if you can take advantage of a BOGO sale, then you will get 2 free.

Anonymous said...

I think that she has a pantry full of boxed and buys frozen foods. I'm not willing to do that so I won't save as much but any savings is better than none and I do save quite a bit thanks to Hip to Save! Thank you!

Anonymous said...

I live in Massachusetts and have couponed for 8+ years. This family is not eating healthy (i.e. "I only clip what is free in the stores" pop tarts, Hamburger Helper, and Tonys pizza as seen in the video).

99% of the coupons in the circular are unhealthy. So while she is saving money on food and carcinogenic health and beauty items, she will pay more in health care from such unhealthy eating and self care in the end.

Anonymous said...

Goodness to the "healthy eating" commenters...if she's bringing home everything else for 4 bucks she probably has a little cash left over in the grocery budget to go to the store and buy a bag of salad with.

But you can get healthy items for free, just take your couponing to a new level. Go to ebay and look for coupons for what you use -- i found "Buy two skippy peanut butters" (faithful health nuts, buy the all-natural kind) get a loaf of bread free" and "buy two Kellogg's cereals, get a half-gallon silk soymilk free". They're out there. So i get my bread free with my 4-cent peanut butter from Target :) .

Unless she "paid" with FS that's the only way non-taxable, she had almost $30 in taxes alone.

And by "store credit" for the next purchase I think they where referring to Catalinas.

I will like to know her menus, does she has a blog?

Anonymous said...

Health is the issue.

Look at many Americans from eating diets like these:

Obese
Diabetes
High blood pressure
High cholesterol
Colon cancer
breast cancer
heart disease
etc

The accumulation of coupons she refers to are 5/50 or 4/40 catalinas.

Anonymous said...

FYI- there is no tax on food in Massachusetts unless prepared (like soda or take out items from the Deli).

Hurrayic said...

Wow! Now there's something to shoot for. What I'd like to ask her is how long it took her to get her stockpile up to that level? It's encouraging to see that she doesn't have all little children to feed. Where do you get coupons off seafood?

Anonymous said...

I'm a New England kid at heart (raised in MA & NH, now living in VT) and have shopped at Shaw's for years.

Shaw's will double coupons up to 99 cents and you can combine their store coupons with manufacturer's. They often have $1/x pounds of (insert item from the meat, deli, or seafood department here) store q's you can print off their website. (They are also in PDF format so you can print as many as you want). I'm guessing that is where the seafood coupons came from. More often that not, these match up with an item on the front of the sale flyer.

I don't remember being charged tax at Shaw's when I went to school in Boston. Except for a prepared food item like a precooked chicken or potato salad from the deli. Not on items like boxed pasta or yogurt.

Anonymous said...

Anon 5:50- I dont always buy multiple papers. The last 2 weeks I only bought the one. It depends on whats in them. The most I have ever bought at once was 5. The thing that helps me the most is I have 2 computers at home so if a good printable comes around I can print 4.

Anonymous said...

In Minnesota we aren't taxed on necessities like food and clothing which is nice.

Anonymous said...

She only buys unhealthy foods? What's unhealthy about scallops? She did great -- you're only focusing on the pizza!

Lynne said...

That was really exciting! Unfortunately we don't have doubles in N.CA and we pay almost 10% sales tax on a lot of items, but I can save about 50-70% with Q's thanks to Collin and this site! That stockpile is impressive most of mine is cereal, granola bars, pasta and peanut butter...LOL... And if she is purchasing newspapers and Q's - well nothing is totally free!

Sunlit_Moon said...

Julie my family ate organic as much as possible until we were laid off. After that, to eat at all we had to eat what we could afford. Having experienced both i'll take Shells n Cheese over starvation any time! And if they're driving paid-for cars and are hammering down their debt so they can be completely free in the near future, more power to them! The constant cortisone assault form the stress of overwhelming debt deposits fat around your organs and is bad for the heart too!

confessionsofashopaholicmom said...

All I have to say is WOW!! She really inspired me to do even better with my couponing!

yenny said...

Thanks,

If you don't have to pay taxes is totally possible then. She just buy was free/cheap each week and pays the rest with overage.

Now you need to have access to multiple coupons and not a couple of inserts. A closet full like she has!!!

Oh, and about the pre-made stuff we all buy junk, but that doesn't mean that is what we feed our families with. That's only what she bought this week, next week she will buy different items and such.

Rebecca said...

I don't know..i think it was a nice video but I wasn't amazed or anything. When I do specific "coupon" trips I save about the same. I only buy what I have coupons for. Im wondering how many items she bought in this trip just to show off (like does she really have a cat?) and make her total higher.

What she did is not impossible...anyone who has been couponing for just a few months can tell ya that!

Anonymous said...

Dont you only pay tax on your out of pocket. Meaning she would only have to pay tax on her 1 cent she spent. We dont pay tax for food in WI but the other things I buy that I get free or nearly free.... I only pay tax on my total after Q's. Am I confused?

Anonymous said...

CA doesn't charge tax on food from the grocery store like canned stuff. We do get charged for fast food and prepared food at the grocery. Tax in my city is 8.75% so if I bought what she did at CVS I would pay at least $7 OOP just for tax. Some cashiers still let us use our ECBs for tax but not most of them. If I have the coupons for the box and frozen stuff like her I just buy the food and donate to someone who will eat it. I'm not overly healthy but I prefer fresh food/home made/ not boxed. I use Catalinas to buy a lot of our fresh fruits and veggies the bread, eggs, etc use a Q if I have one if not I pay whatever I have to for it. I've been getting our milk from Wags or CVS because I can use ECBs or RRs.
I do what I can. I buy 10 papers a week so I have LOTS of Q's. My savings from Q's more than pays for the cost of the papers. whatever Q's I don't use I send to my friend and then whatever Qs expire we send to the military families. I love Q's!! I also have access to 15+ computers so I can print a lot of IPs. I share them with whomever wants them. I'm starting a Q class for my local Senior Center so I have plenty Q's to go around and they need so much help in these times with Social Security getting cut, etc. I love to help. I love to give. I love free/cheap things. I can't believe that I didn't discover Q's 3 years ago before I racked up my credit card bills!! The days of spending $300+ at Target on whatever are over!!

Inspiring video but I agree with the some of the others comments. Usually my tax is more than my subtotal. Our tax here is a whopping 9.25%!!

Emily (Laundry and Lullabies) said...

My sister lives on the east coast and shops at Shaws. Seriously, I wish we had access to those deals over here in CA! I can't come close to her savings, even though I spend as much or more time couponing/deal hunting as she does.

I do wonder about the health factor of this lady's diet. If she's only buying things that are almost free, then almost all of her purchases are probably processed food (aside from the seafood, this is what we saw in the video). While it has a high "cool factor" to be able to stockpile on $4 a week, I personally don't think the health trade-off is worth it.

FrugalMama said...

I think she did a really great job, but I've found there is a balance to be had. Yes, I can sit and compile my list and clip, but there is a sliding scale. The more time I put into my list, the more I can save, but I've found that I can actually stress myself out about it and spend too much time on it. Do I really need to run to four Walgreens to get more free razors when I already have plenty? I've put a one hour time limit per grocery trip on my clipping, list-making, and organizing. If I put more time into it, yes, I could do a lot better, but time with my kids when they are still small counts for a lot too!

Anonymous said...

I still am not understanding the questions about the tax. I pay tax on my total after coupons. You guys are saying you have to pay tax on your totals before coupons??? If so I'm feeling very lucky to live in Wisconsin.

Anonymous said...

Thank you Frugalmom. I have been feeling the same way lately. Sometimes I sit and think is this really worth all the time I put into it?

As far as the healthy eating goes...everything in balance should be the rule...Look it, my dad is in his 70's..he always weighed too much, smoked too much and had high cholesterol etc...Mom watched her diet and exercised and ate healthy...bottom line tho is Mom is dead and dad is still kicking...you do what you can but sometimes you gotta eat the cake. This lady does have a blog btw..you can google her but it's ironically *not* free lol

I think she did a great job, as do many of us every week. I personally think Hip to Saves "Show me Monday" series is much better at accurately teaching and showing us how to shop our best at each store. I have had many trips where the savings have been mind numbing and I do keep a stash of a ton of coupons (a file cabinet full). I also realize that my pantry has a ton of free stuff that I wouldn't rely on to completely feed my family. It has been a great supplement to our weekly meals and I love having enough on hand that I don't have to pay for certain things anymore and very little for others. Are there weeks when I only spend $4 a week in groceries, probably, but there are also weeks when I use a lot more to stock up on great meat prices that are available or frozen veggies. Coupons have completely changed my shopping/budgeting and I am saving $1000's, but those free trips (or less than $1) aren't feeding my family for the week. It's all about balance. Also, if you look at the last couple of things on the register it looks like she used several OYNO's, which in the video she advised that you stockpile as well. That helps tremendously to bring your total down!

Anonymous said...

That was AMAZING!!!! She is the COUPON QUEEN!!! I thought I was doing so well by spending 125.00 a week for a family of four & saving anywhere from 250 to 300 a week. I spent just under 40 bucks this week between Wags & CVS & saved almost 300. So I'm pretty proud of that. lol Sure wish I was as good as her tho!!!

I love your follow me Monday videos. This lady has a great talent but i prefer your videos. I can understand them and follow what you do. I am just learning how to coupon and i love this site. What you tell me is actually doable, but when i see folks doing what that lady does i start getting confused. Plus, i live in western NY and most grocery stores are regional aside of Target, CVS, and the other major stores like that. What that lady does would not be possible here. Anyway, i love your site, and your videos. Keep them coming! You have saved me a ton already.

Sad to read some of you feel like you pale in comparison to her... I mean EVERYTHING on tv is a little rosier than real life, no? She's no different that we are... she just had a camera following her around.

We all do a great job with our skills, and our stores, and our situations, and our cashiers! :-) Keep it up!

k said...

I have 2 Albertsons near me and one of them is the BOMB for couponers. The only problem I EVER have is when something doesn't go quite right I feel bad for the people behind me - but my Albertson's cashiers do NOT get upset - they don't worry and tell the people to try another line and they just make it right - love it.

Also I have a Walgreens that is great too - I had a problem last week with one of their cashiers tsk tsking me - I told the manager about it and he was all over it and said she'd take care of it!

anoo said...

This was great, but I love your Follow Me Monday vids!! I have one grocery store that I refuse to go to now because they tell me that using internet coupons is committing fraud. Even after I told them that all the other stores in town take them for me, they still refused to take them. So I politely asked them to void my purchases and I walked out.

Stephanie in PDX said...

I coupon all the time and I cook our food 6 out of 7 days a week. We are healthy. Of course, we have junk food here and there. Organic does not mean healthy, it's just raised and prepared with stricter guidelines. I do buy some organic stuff with a coupon of course. It drives me nuts to say that you are unhealthy if you only buy food that you have coupons for.

I get taxed BEFORE coupons. So like others have said my subtotal is often far less then the total with tax included. Sometimes I can use OYNO Cats to take off some of the tax, but it depends on your cashier. Great video for someone who is clueless to the underground "couponing" world we have here

Anonymous said...

what does OYNO mean? Clueless!

Carla said...

OYNO=On Your Next Order :) Also referred to as "catalinas" or "cats"...register rewards at Walgreens... These are coupons that print out of a little printer next to the register (after you pay) that are usable on your next purchase. HTH (Hope that helps) :) Don't you just love Q (coupon) lingo??? :)

Carla said...

Yeah, that was cool, but obviously the point of the piece was to show the most EXTREME deals possible. As with all coupons/stores/cashiers/offers/deals...YMMV! (Your Mileage May Vary for the newbies:)

Collin, thanks for sharing this but I love your videos so much more! The best part of what you do is not what is in your pantry but what you give to SO MANY day in and day out with this blog (and surely in your daily life)! You are a great inspiration and should NOT compare yourself or your videos to this person or interview! A MILLION THANK YOUS for all you do to bring us the deals and info. and awesome tips for how to share the wealth! God bless you and your fam! :)

Staying Lean said...

That was great and great motivation. I don't have 2 hours to prepare for a shopping trip and I must admit I do indulge at times but I do use a similar strategy I shop 4 times a week and 2 trips I limit myself to things that are $.50 or under the other 2 trips $1 and under mostly. It keeps me within budget. So I agree it is not impossible but you have to factor in the first year of shopping like that and building stock pile and having the time to spend the extra hour on coupons. So I'll stick with my budget for now!

Anonymous said...

First, I wish to thank you for your great post which helps me save a lot on my grocery.

I find the comments more interesting than the video. When I first started couponing, I used to feel so bad when I was not able to do what I read on blogs but now I just feel thankful for whatever I can save. Different region and store policies hampers it. I live in Florida and none of the store double Q and at times the cashier is the hindrance.

Just 2 days ago, I was in Publix with only 12 items and 9Q but this young cashier has to ask the manager to approve every one of those Q. The manager said just go ahead, everything is in order but she still did it reluctantly. It took more than 15 mins for her. When I left, I asked her if she is mad at me because she looked so grumpy. She said no but very confused!

I wonder if this person has a blog and if she will share her couponing secret?

Thanks so much for sharing and I don't know how you have time to do since you ahve little children!

God bless

My 2 daughters, 8 and 15 yrs went to the store with me the other day. They stayed in the car while I ran into Kroger. I took longer than I intended to. My 15 yr old was complaining..."whats taking her so long"
My 8 yr old says...."Dani,... She took her coupon purse!"
I thought that was so funny.
but I got $30.00 worth of groceries for $16.90. I was thrilled.
coupon tax on 4 or 5 coupons was .18 cents.
What state is the "penny shopper" in???

The fact the it was only .01 cent makes perfect sense to me. I have done this at kmart for there doubles and actually had to buy a pack of gum so I wasnt in the negative. Ended up paying .59 cents for $70 purchase after coupons.

Echoing everyone else--love the "Follow Me Mondays"!! They are wonderful. Also, like another post mentioned there is not a possiblity for me to have this happen due to the requirement of tax being paid!

I thought the video was inspiring and yes she is an extreme couponer! Kudos to her! Quite frankly, who cares that she saves more because of the no sales tax. Whatever! Good for her.

I took the video as an inspiration. We are all going to save at different rates and that is fine. I think it is awesome that there are so many of us that GET IT! I have friends I have been trying to convince forever about saving. In any case, thank you for the best blog around! I sincerely mean that! I read numerous blogs daily. But, if I could only read one, it would be yours. There have been times when I only read yours. Your ideas, savings, and great finds are AWESOME! THANK YOU!!!!

Wow.

Collin, I love Follow Me Mondays! I am new to couponing. I've only been at it for a month now. I was able able to save almost 90% at Walgreens shopping there for the first time after watching your Walgreens video! I read your CVS post yesterday and I am going to try there next! Thanks!

I really wished the stores here around Chicago doubled coupons. Does anyone know why one state will double and other don't?? The sales tax is killer too! Food items is low but non food is 8.5% in my city.

I love your "Follow Me Monday" Video's. Like someone else said I feel like I am shopping with a friend. Thanks for all your money saving tips! I have been following you for about 2 months and am amazed at how much money I wasted in the past (and I thought I was a good bargain shopper before)lol. Thanks again! Carla

I found it interesting to watch..but left me with a lot of question. I also feel like she probably "saved" the good free coupons just for the T.V. broadcast. I too prefer Cullen..she's "real".

Indiana does not tax food so feasible I could come out owing nothing if I just bought food. Finding a place that doubles coupons is hard. And I don't care how she feeds her family as long as they have food Kwim?

I could not imagine that kind of stock pile, nor do I really want one like that....makes me feel greedy. I donate to the food bank through our church.

And I've put myself on a budget of no more than $125 per week oop including going out to eat.

I have a friend that does this all the time. We do have to pay the tax here in Georgia, but her before tax total is almost always under $1 including produce, meat, milk, whatever she needs. She does go to the store daily though to make the most of her q's (our store takes competitor q's). She seriously only spends about $50-$60 per month on EVERYTHING in her house.

I do pretty good - I spend about $200 a month on a family of 6 including everything we buy (1 baby in diapers, 1 in pullups, and all household supplies included), and we NEVER eat out. We do buy a lot of milk, meat, and produce though, so that is why we aren't at $4 a week!

Everyone who takes the time to shop smart and coupon is benefiting their family, wheter you save $5 or $200. Collin, you are awesome and we all so appreciate your hard work and time :)

I'm going to echo the other posters who said the the "Follow Me Mondays" are much more inspirational then the GMA video.

You take the time to explain how you purchase certain products and continually do with a great and encouraging attitude! :)

Not everyone can extreme coupon their purchase down to .01, but with your help we save a little or a lot here and there. It all adds up!!

Thanks so much and keep going strong!!!

How would she get free milk every week for all that cereal? Well, you can if you get the $1 ECB on milk plus a $1.79 moneymaker. I guess is possible, but CVS doesn't offer $1 ECB on milk every week, does it? My grocery store never has any deals on milk.

WOW WOW WOW! That is SOOOOO motivating! I can hardly wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How wonderful would it feel to get out of the grocery store with just paying pennies???!!!

I find this very hard to believe. Unless she is handing over coupons that she doesn't even have the item for or handing over duplicate coupons, which your not suppose to do, there is NO way to get a $260+ bill down to pennies. I don't believe it. I would like to see a list of everything she bought along with her coupons she used. And to do this every week? Please.
