Are you having issues Price Matching at Target?

Alright, so I've gotten more than a few emails from readers stating that they've had major issues trying to do the UP & Monsters Inc Best Buy Price match deal I posted earlier today.

Basically, they were told that you cannot price match and also use a Target coupon. You either have to decide one or the other. I called Target corporate--which was pointless. They said it's up to the stores discretion, so I didn't get an answer either way.

I feel bad posting deals that don't work out for everyone. I know how easy it is to get discouraged when you first start out couponing. I don't want the store scenarios on my site to make you feel that way. If you ever have questions about anything I post, please don't hesitate to email me.

Anyway, I'd love to hear, and I'm sure others would too, what experience you've had trying to price match an item that you've used a Target coupon on. I'm curious to see if every Target store has different "rules" they like to set.

I have price matched, first the has to be done at customer service. They will price match with the AD and then once they give you the new total. Smile and hand them you coupons. I did it (including smile) and it worked fine.

I use manufacturer coupons all the time. But will be purchasing a printer in a few weeks because these printable deals are fantastic. My question is..When you print out the coupons for to use at say Target or Walmart do you print them in color or is black and white sufficient?

Unknown said...

You can always price match at Walmart. I do it all the time. Target is new to price matching. HTH

My friend and I were both able to do the deal at Target, and spent $11.64 for both movies!! THANKS =)

Stevie,
You can print in black and white... that's all I use at Walmart/Target.

I price matched today at Target on toliet paper (random I know, but I had a target Q and a mfg. Q, so i wanted to be able to use them both) I had no problem. They took the Target Q and the Mfg. Q. I did however try to use the Kmart ad to get Lincoln Logs price matched and they said no since it just said 50% off their ad, without listing a price. I guess that makes sense, but now i have to go ro Kmart for the Lincoln Logs and I hate to make extra trips for little things like that...

I was NOT able to price match the Monsters Inc/ Up deal. "Bundle" deals are expressly excluded in the Target price matching policy, and even though I was buying both, they would not price match the Monsters pack because on the Best Buy it is a "Buy this thing and get this thing cheaper" deal.

I'm angry and have written Target to tell them that. Deals should be the same across the board, not great deals for some people and okay deals for others.

I have only had sucess price matching if I check out at customer service. The Target coupons change the price on the receipt (not just log as a coupon) so I have them match the price first and then use the coupons.

I price matched the cereal a couple of weeks back when it was $1.75 at walgreens. then I used the $1 target Q to get the boxes for $.75 I also did this to get free chex mix. she did it right at the register and gave me no trouble about it. I live in Fort Worth, TX.

The price match worked perfectly for me. I did it at the service desk. I brought the Best Buy add to price match, but the Target price was better for the Up movie. They let me use the coupons, too, so the total was less than $14! Awesome!

Anonymous said...

I would try doing it again. Sometimes different people will yield different results. I went there and did the price matching for the Clues game and gave them my manufacturers Q and my Target Q, no problem. I went back to do this deal with the videos and they said it couldnt be done. So I will just go back later on during the week or to a different Target and try again.

Just got back from Target... had never price matched anything before this offer but it went SO well! UP was actually priced at $19.99 so they didn't need to adjust it but did on the Monsters Inc to $18.99. (Best Buy ad) After that I handed over my 2 man q's & Target q bringing my total down to $11.80! (I also got the .5 cent credit for my bag) The customer service lady goes, "WOW! That's an awesome deal!" To which I replied, "I know, right?!"

Love the blog, Collin & love Target!!!!

jessica said...

It is easier if you check out with the target price, use your coupons and then go to the service desk with your receipt and the ad you would like to price match.

Anonymous said...

It worked out for me too with the Best Buy match. I paid 17.29 incl tax. My friend went a couple of hours later and they wouldn't let her use the 10$ Target coupon if she gets the Monsters movie matched to $18.99!!!!!

Things like this is what makes me feel like im doing something criminal sometimes...do we REALLY believe the deal stacking is working as INTENDED to give away products at these prices sometimes? All the free cereal work-arounds etc...its not a good "oh man i got a deal"... sometimes..i feel down right like im being sneaky, and that has nothing to do with how I'm treated.

I think some places are going to catch a big defecit eventually and figgure it out and coupon'ing will be so strict it'll be reduced to barely any savings some day..

Anonymous said...

Also when we know we have been told that something is not accepted and we knowingly go back later for a different person to possibly push it thru..

or like when I myself took that 3rd 10.00 of 2 "just in case" they didnt notice I was using a coupon on the already free wii games @ target so I could score an extra 10.00 off...

thats knowingly intentionally manipulating the system..thats not some innocent accident in our favor...

anyone else have some ethical issues with some of these things ever?

It worked for me! The cashier was actually excited to figure out how to do a price match and, for whatever reason, my Up BluRay Bundle rang up as only 19.99 but I still got the 10 off. Bonus! So, I feel like i got a great deal with my $28 in coupons (yes, they let me stack them) and the price match from Best Buy (although I only did it for Monsters because it was cheaper at Target). Thanks for the tips!

Terry said...

At my Store, I check out then go to the Customer Service Desk to get a refund for the price match difference. I once tried to price match cereal with a CVS add. The lady stared at the add for 30 seconds and then said, you need a store card to get this price so we won't match it. She said I could return the cereal if I wanted but there was no way for me to get my coupons back if I did.

I did do the Barbie DVD deal you posted. I got Barbie and the Three Musketeers plus Barbie and the 12 Dancing Princess priced matched with Toys R Us for $9.99. I also used both coupons you had suggested, the Target Coupon and the Peelie. The 12 Dancing Princess wasn't pictured in the Toys R Us add but the little sign read "Universal DVDs $9.99." The girl who helped me this time was really nice and seemed happy to help me get a deal. Other times at the same store, some cashiers seem to look for ways to stop me.

Anon 4:42. For every one of us that uses coupons, there are 10 people who don't. So i really doubt the deficit thing. If you feel so bad, maybe you should not do it then. Just do whatever you are comfortable with.

I tried to price match at one Target today and they would only price match UP and not Monsters Inc since that was $10 off a bundled price. I went to another Target 10 minutes away and they did it with no problem. I guess I know what Target I'll go to from now on - especially since the employees at the first Target were gossiping with each other when they thought I couldn't hear and calling me greedy. Oh well, I saved a lot of money today! Both movies for $12.46! :)

I always do my price matches at customer service. I do the same that that the first anon posted. Smile, do price match first, THEN hand over coupons. I have one lady that works in customer service that I "love" to go to. She is always so happy to see my good deals with coupons. Although there is another lady that is a bear, and I try to stay away when she is there. :-)

I did you deal for the Clue game earler this week and had no problem price matching with the Kmart ad and useing both man and target coupons. Thanks for all you do to help us!!

I have price matched with no problem. I went to customer service, showed them the ad, and then used manufacture and target coupons on top of it. The lady didn't question me a bit!

I am a new couponer and I am nervous using regular coupons as such, leave alone price matching. Maybe when I become a pro, I'll try.

I price matched this weekend on the Barbie 3 Muskateers DVD. It was the first time they had done it and I went to customer service. They were happy to do it though and allowed the coupon! Actually were excited to learn how to price match. This was in Des Moines.

I have loved that Target is price-matching and although I have yet to try it on this Movie deal I have price-matched on just about everything else including 8 boxes of Frosted Mini-Wheats this morning(and used the $1 off Mannie and $1 off Target) without any trouble.

Oh and Anon at 4:23 was right a smile is ALWAYS helpful!

I thought price matching plus using a Target coupon was too good to be true, since not only are you getting a lower base price, but you are also getting a Target coupon discount that you would not be able to use if you went to the other store, but I price matched Skippy peanut butter and used the Target coupons and manufacturer coupons at the register. The cashier didn't know how to do it, though, so the front end manager told me to just pay and get it corrected at customer service. I did, and the peanut butter was actually lower than the advertised price I was price matching (b/c of the Target Q). The older woman at customer service didn't have any problem with that, though--although she did have trouble remembering how to do a price match. She eventually figured it out, though.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if they changed the policy so that you can't use Target Qs on price-matched items.

Don't feel bad about posting YMMV deals (and honestly, most of these deals are YMMV, whether that's because managers use their "discretion" or because the prices or coupons are different in various regions or because overage isn't allowed or whatever). Everybody can't get every deal--and thank goodness, or our houses would look like warehouses!

I just went to the cashier and she was more than happy to price match (it's a brand new target) instead of going to customer service....only my total came to $3.33...I'm still on a high and denial that this actually happened to ME!!! I had a $5 gift card....so I paid nothing out of pocket!! Yahoo! Whooo Hoo!!! These will be great in my children's stockings this Christmas!!!

I price matched the kmart ad and used manu and target q's for clue, picturika and connect 4. I also did the price match with Best Buy for the movies, and they accepted all the coupons. I have found it varies by Targets. If I go to the Target at the mall, boy do we have issues with coupons and price matching. But the Target in my town is GREAT!!! They are very coupon friendly, I just hope it stays that way.

MalibuBeachBum said...

There is no way in the WORLD I would have stood in a regular line at Target to work that "Best Buy/price match/3 coupon deal" on those DVD's today. I knew going in there that my best shot of getting it done painlessly (for me AND for them) would be to deal only with someone at the customer service desk. Worked out perfectly.

Just yesterday, I stood in line for baby wipes. My cashier spazzed out (in a nice way) when I handed over several computer-printed coupons prior to payment. The coupons wouldn't scan and she knew she would have to enter them all by hand. I stood there reading each of those looooooong numbers off of 8 coupons for her as she punched them into her register. LOL! I didn't mind, though.

Today's DVD adventure with all of it's possible twists and turns may just have given one of the "regular" cashier's a stroke.

Frances said...

They price marched with the ad at customer service and then I handed them the coupons. They were confused about the manufacture and target coupons both being used, but they still let me use both. I got UP for 4.99 and Monsters Inc.for 5.99 plus tax. What a deal!

So today I price matched the Monster's Inc. DVD from Best Buy at Target and they said it was a bundle deal and wouldn't match it. BUT I went to a different Target and the matched it no problem. Target is still new to price matching so there are a lot of uncertainties when attempting to get a good deal. It depends on the manager - which is VERY annoying. But I was finally able to get both DVDs today for $11.64 after the headache of price matching and coupons! It was worth it!

I DO NOT feel like we are robbing anyone. We should NOT feel guilty for getting good deals. These products are marked up so much that EVERYONE is still MAKING money!!! That's the GREAT thing about this world. Everyone makes money and everyone gets what they want. PLUS, not everyone uses coupons.

Why are people so annoying and frustrating! Manufacturers wouldn't produce coupons if they didn't want people to use them. HELLO, it's the manufacturers who make the coupons anyways. They KNOW what they are doing!!!

Anonymous said...

Sigh... I was so excited to try to price matching, but my Target was sold out of Monsters Inc. And they checked other stores in the area and there were only a few left... Everyone must be doing this deal! I guess I'll try back later this week. Anyone know what the second best deal is for getting Up / Monsters Inc?? (in case I can't get it at Target). Thx

Anonymous said...

I really don't think that Target knows how to follow through on their own price matching. I think this is totally a hit and miss. I REALLY appreciate all the hard work that Hip to Save does.
I purchased both UP and Monsters Inc. with the rest of my items and them took the movies to customer service to price match. I had no problems at all. When I got home I took a look at my receipt and some how only ended up paying $5 Total for both movies!!! I'm not sure how they figured this?

AG said...

The Target I went to would not price match Monsters because the "Up" I was buying was not the same item as Best Buy's. Targets "Up" has an adventure journal with it, so they are right, the aren't the same exact item. I had a friend go to a different Target and they price matched it for her. So, yes each store does handle things differently. Also, when I was at Target the lady at customer service asked me if there was a sign by Monsters, Inc. that said "limit one per customer", there wasn't, but she said she was going to call back and have them put that sign out. So you might want to watch for that if you are trying to pick up more than one of these.

I just did the 2 Barbie movies last week and priced matched, used the Target coupon and the peelie and it worked great! I really think a lot of times it depends on if you get the "right cashier".

I really hate Target sometimes. They gave me a hard time with price matching. Also I had notice I had bought something a week before and in the Sunday ad it went down in price. I called to make sure they would price adjust it for me, she said no, which was weird because I mom said it was 14 days. I called another store and they said yes. So I went ahead and drove to the store that had told me no and they price adjusted it with no problems. I totally think its the person you get.

I purchased the movies, used the coupons and then went to customer service were they price match/ refunded 8 dlls for the monsters dvd.
The girl at customer service told me that next time go directly to the counter, price match and then use the coupons.

I had an issue last week price matching with Toys R Us. It was a long tedious process (like over an hour) but it was worth it because I saved over $60! And next time I know to go directly to customer service to check out and avoid the regular lane altogether!

I had no problem "up" here in Alaska - I always take my price matches to the customer service (there are never any long lines here LOL) and they have been very nice about it- have done about 1 a week for the past 2 months and they just smile when they see me and ask what my bargain is this time- but no malice just kindness. Wish everyone could have that experience because I leave feeling so good and a bit of a coupon high- no guilt- I only have guilt when I pay full price for an item- can hardly bring myself to do it anymore LOL

I had no issues at all. The UP movie was priced at $19.99 with a journal and extra stuff and they price matched Monsters Inc. at $18.99 from Best Buy ad. After coupons I paid $10.98!!! thats $5.49 each!!! awesome. Im so happy with this buy. Not only will my child enjoy it but I aswell. Im just as big a kid as they are! lol

I just got back from doing it. When they scanned the "Up" combo it actually rang up for 19.99 and the "Monsters" was 26.99. They price matched the "Monsters" to 18.99 from Best Buy. They then swiped my $10 "Up" $8 "Monsters" and $10 Target coupons. On top of that there was a $10 stuck to the "Up" and they gave me that to. Total with tax for both $3.59

DO IT ALL AT CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!

i've purchased at the regular cashier, used coupons and then attempted to price match. big hassle. the q's for "change" the price so when you attempt to get the price difference with the ad at customer service, unless you have a cashier who has done this a million times, they get confused, then managers come, who get confused and its just a big problem. has been everytime ive gone. but...

if you go directly to the cust. service and do what anon #1 mentioned...all is well :)

I've had no problem matching ads and using Target coupons and other coupons. They did tell me though that I couldn't do the Barbie DVD deal because it was a toy book price, not a weekly ad. I called Target corporate when I got home and they said those ads are fine to use. I emailed Target and asked if they would match ads for Black Friday and here was the response: "Thanks for writing about price matching on Black Friday at Target®. We appreciate your patience as we research your experience. I’ll write you back as soon as our research is complete." I find it weird that they don't know the answer to that yet? also I asked if their black friday prices would also be available online and their reply: "Yes, I've checked and confirm that Black Friday prices also available online and if you see any promotion about this, please go ahead place the order now. Then, e-mail us with your order number, and we'll go in and manually adjust the order to reflect the promotion." This is crazy! Does that mean that they will accept black friday prices online NOW? Wow!

Went to Meijer and they price matched the best buy ad. Didn't get as good of deal as those at Target but 14.96 w/tax for both movies.

I price matched the Barbie DVD's at the Target in Riv.CA but they would not give me the additional $5 off (Coupon tag attached to one of the videos) because there was nothing to scan. Maybe it was on the inside of the case itself? It's for a gift so I did not want to open it. I had to take the items to customer service to do the price match. They would not do them at the electronics register.

The target in Newport News,VA would price match UP but would not Monsters Inc beacuse it was a bundled deal at BestBuy, so I didn't even get to try to use the coupons. They will also only do price matches at the Customer Service desk which they didn't tell me till after I got to the cashier so I had to wait in line twice with two little ones.

I just wanted to briefly address Anonymous @ 4:42's thoughts of feeling "criminal." Stacking coupons is perfectly legitimate. It's in the store's own coupon policy. Not everyone who gets the store's sale flyer will use their coupon, and not everyone will get (or use) a manufacturer's coupon. There's no worry of a deficit. The store and the manufacturer create these coupons because they WANT you to shop. They want your business. The manufacturer who produced the coupon will reimburse the store, so the store is not out any money; and the store who produced the coupon will foot the bill for that portion, which they would do regardless for anyone using that coupon, stacked or not. You don't have to feel guilty about anything because you simply are not doing anything wrong. It's not cheating the system -- it's "smart shopping."

Thanks for taking the time to ask us about Target's Low Price Promise.

We do accept the manufacturer coupon and/or Target coupon to be used with the Low Price Promise Ad Match for a further price reduction. The coupon would need to be presented at time of check out at the register/POS and not given at the Guest Service counter.

We look forward to showing you what's new at Target.

Anon 4:48: Though it's probably true that only one of ten customers is a couponer, couponers sometimes seem to be . . . ummm . . . greedy. So you've got your regular customers who buy only what they need and your super-coups who get as much as possible of anything that is free or a moneymaker or can be resold at yard sales or on ebay (er, I mean, donated to a homeless shelter, of course!) or whatever. Just look at the wipe issue. If Target held people to one per transaction per the coupon, we wouldn't be amidst the great Target wipe shortage of ought-nine. Do you really think Target's intent is to outfit a couple families with wipes into perpetuity or to get those to a broader segment of the market, where they might do Target some good in the form of future purchases? Those few couponers certainly cause more damage than the other nine paying customers, especially when you factor in all the ill will from the folks who want to the deals but can't get them because the shelves are wiped clean or who don't get the same deal as their neighbor and write outraged letters to corporate.

So, yes Anon 4:42 and 4:46, I do have ethical issues with some of the deals, too. I have done many of the deals here, amazed that they worked, but not always feeling totally great about snagging a deal. What helps me is never doing freebie-only deals without also purchasing (i.e., paying for) items (with green U.S. money--not more coupons!); never doing multiple transactions to "score" deals; avoiding outrageous stacks of coupons, especially multiple coupons (never more than two like coupons--just looks suspicious to me--and I used to be a cashier!); avoiding buying trial size products with coupons that are more than the value of the item; and generally buying what I need (vs. stocking up for the next millennium). And I generally don't argue if I don't get the deal. If I want it bad enough, I'll pay for the items; if not, I'll nicely ask to take them off.

Lay down your own personal list of couponing ethics and pick and choose the deals you feel comfortable doing. You may need to avoid some websites for your own sanity (I have to stay out of HCW forums, for instance, or my blood pressure goes through the roof, and I also stopped reading the blog of a woman who I simply couldn't respect). Hope this helps--and I hope you stick around and continue to post your perspective. Too often discussions of ethics are shouted down.

I priced matched at Target last night and I didn't have any problems. I went to the customer service counter when I first walked in, to make sure I could do it. They told me to take the item straight to them to pay for it and not the regular cashiers first. I went and got the Scatterpillar Scramble game and took it to the customer service counter. I priced matched it with the Toys R Us ad and then gave them the $5 Target coupon, along with the $4 manufacture's coupon and I didn't have any problems.

I've price matched at two different Target stores. The first time I was at a Super Target and had no problem using the Target coupon with a price match at the register. They didn't have another Barbie movie so I went across town to the other regular Target. They would not price match at the register so I had to go to the service desk where they did price match and I was able to use the Target coupon. I so far have had no problems. I was surprised because I had read about so many other people having issues.

it is frusterating to see that Target is being so picky, and inconsistant... the DVD's are the same at both stores- the only difference was the Target one had a journal shrink wrapped in the package. I feel bad for shoppers that found managers that did not honor this- afterall, retailors want your business right now! I had no problems with this deal, my cashier was friendly and did not question anything I brought to her. I told her she might see this deal come up later today, never even batted an eye... Target is not loosing any money- 2 out of the 3 coupons belonged to the manufactuers!

ClickClan: where are you living--Shangri-La? ("These products are marked up so much that EVERYONE is still MAKING money!!! That's the GREAT thing about this world. Everyone makes money and everyone gets what they want.")

Everyone is not making money. In fact, these deals are so darn good that American jobs are being outsourced to support our lust for cheap goods. The unemployment rate is more that 10 percent. How many people here post about doing deals *because* they've lost their jobs? Buying more goods from China won't bring them back. There is a price for everything.

I've had no problems price matching and then using Target Qs on top of the match. At my local Targets (south Florida), all price matches must be done at customer service, and no one has ever even questioned me!

The only glitch I've ever had was when I tried to ring through the regular register with all my Qs and then price match at customer service. They couldn't figure out how to override the system to "re-use" my Qs, so they just gave me a refund for the difference.

Nobody's asking you to do anything, ClickClan (is that your real name? : ), but it's simplistic and erroneous to say that everyone is making money when everyone clearly is not. That is not how the world works. Manufacturers don't lose money--they simply move overseas where labor is cheaper, labor standards are often nonexistent, and they can maintain their profit margin. Americans lose jobs.

I am usually quite on your site as I follow it daily, but hardly ever post a comment.

Today, though, is a different story. I went my local Target today with printed AD from the Internet in hand (I was looking to pick up the Pictureka Flipper with K-Mart price matched $14.99 and MF and Target Coupons). Anyway...I was told that a printed Internet Ad will NOT work and you have to have the actual AD from Sunday's paper. So, I came home dug through the recycle bin and found my K-Mart ad and wouldn't you know...I couldn't find the game (it must have been regional:)

Sad for me! Just wanted to put my information in, but I am sure that everyone else is having this problem.

I price matched 2 board games last week with the Toys R Us ad and they told me to go to cust. service. I didn't have any problems and they took my target and manufacturer coupons as well. When I went to take my big book ad back they told me it was their policy to keep the ad just in case they wanted to double check the adjustment. I hadn't heard of this and didn't want to give up the ad but didn't argue, we got another one in the mail so no biggie.

I'm in Ft Worth, TX & I priced matched with the Toys R Us ad, as well as used MQ & TQ on the items. I matched for the Leap Frog Tag Jr & their books, the Barbie DVDs as listed on this site, and the Monsters/Up deal scenario. I did go to customer service where they were very glad to help. And they accepted 2 TQs for each of the toddler wipes, in the same transaction! Smiling definitely helps...thanks Collin for your work on these incredible deals!

Can anyone tell me if they have had any problems in the chattanooga tn area. I am new to couponing and would just like to be prepared.

Anonymous said...

Perhaps each of us should call Target corporate and tell them that we don't like their policy of leaving it up to the individual store. I live in an area where there are 5 Targets within a short drive. I don't want to have to check each stores policy or have to go to one that is out of the way that day in order to get a good deal or find out that a change in management means I have to accept all new policies. I also want to be able to tell my friends and know they will be treated the same at their Target as I am at mine.

Anonymous said...

First let me say that I absolutely love this site. Secondly, I'm a bit confused as to why anyone that has a problem with couponing would even be on this site.

As a former corporate accounting employee I can assure you that the value of coupons are compensated for in the advertising and marketing budget for each company...believe me they know what they are doing.

Furthermore, there are people that have been couponing for years not just months so consider this: wouldn't the companies have altered their policies by now if we were causing them a deficit....think about it.

As a matter of fact the companies that I worked for loved when customers used the coupons...after all the objective was to get you in the door. Don't over think this or make saving out to be a criminal act. Stores wouldn't even have a coupon policy if they didn't have a system in place to track and allocate your coupon spending. For instance, Target wouldn't allow you to stack coupons if they were losing money. They would simply say only one coupon per product per transaction.

Today was my first price-match attempt and as it turned out, the newest Target price ($19.99) was lowest so I didn't have to. But, they were going to do it and seemed to not have a problem with it. I had also used the mutiple coupons and it did not phase them. That was at the Customer Service Desk. They did tell me that I could price match at the register, which I will try soon.

I agree that it just sometimes depends on your cashier - and their attiude - which bites. I ALWAYS try to be extra nice and smiley when I get up there. I do think it helps sometimes...

I made the mistake of following Target's own written policy of paying for my items in the checkout and then taking it to customer service for the price adjustment (I was price matching with my Walmart ad, my Duncan Hines mixes should have worked out to free). I also had a receipt from a few days earlier for them to price match as well. They were willing, but I went through three different ladies of increasing authority and a full half hour of them trying to figure out how to do it before they finally handed me one receipt for the supposed adjustment. My daughter was so late for her nap by that time that I told them thank you but I can't wait for the other receipt to get done. I got home to find they hadn't even done the first one correctly. I was so frustrated I called corporate and got lots of apologies but told I was out the money unless I went back to the store with the receipts. Fat chance that was happening. It was just a few dollars so not worth the added aggravation, but it becomes about the principle of the matter and them wasting my time. That is the only Target near me, and the problem is they just don't know their own policy. I know they have me pegged as a problem since I have had to stand up for myself on a number of occasions now. It's really frustrating because I totally play by the rules. I even had one supervisor tell me that she just thought it was wrong that I should expect to use a coupon to get an item for free from a store. But since it's the only Target near me and I can still get good deals, I keep shopping there but just make sure I stay completely polite and make sure I am using the coupons 100% correctly so I can stand up for myself when I have too. I will price match in the future if I need to, but I've learned my lesson the hard way - I will go straight to customer service to pay.

wow, i love how target deals turned into americans loosing their jobs to overseas markets lol. I did the price matching today and it went ok though they really didnt know how to do it so it took a while. they have only been doing it at my target for a month or so. I have to look at my receipt again because i think something went wrong. there were only two monsters left and cs was confused if it was the combo pack or not. I get frustrated when someone in retail has no clue about the products they are selling. I understand you cant know everything but she did not even know what a blu-ray combo pack was. i was also a little frustrated because we had just came from toys r us (hubby's video game- his only xmas present :( ) and i had my two kiddos with me (2 and ten months lol)

How about if we say where we did it so others can maybe benefit? I price matched the Barbie movies from the TRU with the Target coupon and the peelie on the front at the Roseville CA Greatland with no problem at all just 3 days ago. They actually congratulated me on a good deal!

Its so weird they don't do that. When I worked for Walmart, we would have meetings in the accounting office where I worked. I asked the manager about coupons and price matching with a coupon after. She told me this..

Ya! Why not!? We want their business and we would rather have their money then have them take their coupon and go to that store that is selling it cheaper and give them their money.

It makes sense to me! I mean Walmart and Target are right across the street from each other in my town. If I went to Walmart with a toy coupon but Target across the street was selling that item $5.00 cheaper and I priced matched..then handed them my coupon and they said no..I would say well cancel my purchase and I will go across the street where I won't need to price match and I will still get to use my coupon.

I'm not sure how Target runs it..but sounds like its a store manager thing that needs to be corrected by head office.

Karen said...

It really is the discretion of the store. My Target store will NOT allow coupons to be used for trial size items about 90% of the time. They say it's against coupon policy (even with the printed policy off their website).

However, they allowed price matching for me today but said I needed to go to customer service first because if you use coupon at the register, it can mess up how much they price adjust later.

Anonymous said...

I once price matched at my Walmart with a young cashier. Then I handed her my coupon and she said "I can't do both" and I said very stern..YES YOU CAN.lol She just rolled her eyes in a "whatever" type attitude and scanned my coupon lol. I have not priced matched in quite some time though.

no problems here, though I will be returning tomorrow as I did not catch that there is a $10 Man coupon for Up to go with the $8 Man for Monsters and the Target $10/2. I find that price matching is best done at Customer Service.

I saw Up with my grandchildren last summer & thoroughly enjoyed it. Not only are you getting a good price but you are getting an excellent movie. One word of warning, there are actually some sad parts when the old man's beloved wife passes away. This is not actually seen, but you know what has happened. I didn't mean this to be a spoiler, just wanted to give a heads up that some parents might be put in a position to explain this to impressionable young ones. Enjoy the movie!

Anony. No ethical issues here. I bet you manipulate other systems in place for control like rolling stop at an intersection with a stop sign?! There are so many people that do not know how to use or use coupons at all that a deficit is highly unlikely. If the companies were loosing money, they would have figured it out by now and stopped issuing coupons.

My suggestion is that if you feel bad, quit using coupons and start paying regular retail again.

I got the UP and Monsters INC movies for $10. I didn't even try to price match, since with my coupons I could get them both for $20. I asked the cashier if I could use the $10 peelie with the target one, and he said as long as it doesn't beep. I always have better luck with the male cashiers. Mooresville,NC

Sadly, my coupon experiences with Target, including price matching, are THE WORST. At least once a month I visit to see if Target has fixed their many coupon issues. Each visit, I end up at the service desk. When all is said and done, the lack of clear direction at Target adds 45 min to my already busy day ... and that needs to be factored into the potential cost savings.

As far as moving overseas because manufacturers are loosing money, most of the manufactured items that we purchase are made overseas, China or India, and it is not due to the fact that the Corporations manufacturing these goods were loosing money. It IS sue to the fact that these corporations realized that their American dollars go SO MUCH FURTHER overseas where resources and labor are cheap, mostly due to lack or human rights legislation, that it is cheaper to build a factory there, and pay 15 people to watch the machines stamp out BluRay movies, Barbie Dolls, Transformers, or any one of an endless number of items and ship them back to us in containers. Does anyone know how much it costs to ship a container overseas? I looked into it. To ship a container from ElSalvador to San Diego was $500.00 US. Just imagine how many cases of UP and Monsters Inc BluRay combo packs I can stuff in there. Now think about the fact that it would cost 4-5 times that for just one employee in the US with the overhead involved.

There is a reason things are made overseas, and it is not because less than 1% of all coupons produced are redeemed.

ahhh ethics...I dont think that anon was being nasty...just voicing her opinion and feelings. SOunds like she likes to get a good deal but is not a clean out the shelves or steal all the peelies type of couponer that we all dont like very much. I say to each their own. I disagree that coupons are causing the demise of the American economy and outsourcing of jobs. I coupon, and do these deals also. I dont buy out the shelves when there is free cereal, soaps, wipies...etc. I DO take advantage of these deals and save a TON of money for my family. I dont feel bad or guilty. As someone else pointed out, these companies are not stupid, they budget for these, and as we all know there are limited number of coupons out there and once the limit is reached you cant get the coupon anymore. So no, personally I dont feel bad about couponing and getting cheap goods after using the coupons. the stores are not out the money since the manuf. pay them for the coupons, and the manuf. budget for these coupons.

On a personal note, for me personally, I dont usually do the trial sizes for free stuff, unless I really want to try the product or will use it in my diaper bag/travel bag etc...Personally speaking I dont like to get a whole bunch of ummm...lets say laundry detergent because of the bottles and waste I would produce using them as opposed to a bigger bottle. That is just a personal choice. Sure I would get one if I was traveling somewhere and knew I would need it, but for mw getting 20 free trial size laundry detergents would not sit well. But that is just me and a personal choice. I would NEVER tell someone that they should not do those deals or they are bad for doing them. IMO those people are not bad, it is just something that I personally feel better not doing.

Anyway. I day GREAT JOB Hip to Save for this awesome blog and for this amazing deal. I was able to score both combo packs today at Target for $9.57 total after tax. No price matching, Up was priced at 19.99 and Monsters Inc was priced at $16.99!!! after coupons I made out great, and dont feel bad at all doing so. But I will say that IMO stores that accept coupons are smart, because I will go to them for all my needs, not just when I have coupons for deals. Since my Target is so great at accepting coupons etc...I always go there to use my coupons and buy all my other needs when I am there. Win WIN!!!

I have used a price match, mani coupon & a target coupon several times at Target. Always at the register and I never have a problem. I actually have more problems because they won't take their own Target coupons if they don't scan and they hardly ever do scan.

My 3 yr. old has asked for Up for Christmas just tonight. Lol. Where does he get his from? I guess he remembers the movie. It cost us, for a family of 5, around $40 to go to the movies and that was a matinee price! With 3-D glasses...which were around $10 extra. Anyway, we go at least once a yr. wish it could be more! But the DVD would be great. I am going to try and get this deal as well...I am very excited about this Christmas season as my husband's hours have finally went back up at his job, for the time being anyway-perfect timing for the season-and I am new to all this hulabaloo of couponing. Tis the season!

Target's price matching policy is extremely unfriendly to their customers. They are not consistent and make it as hard as they possibly can. Just found out today that they won't price match special promotions ie. early bird specials, etc. A store in town had the new UP DVD on special for 9.98 until noon on 11-10-09. Target wouldn't match it because it was a special promotion. I walked down the street to Best Buy and they did it without any problems.

I had a problem yesterday price matching the two Barbie movies that was posted about this week. At the bottom of the page of the Toys R US ad there was a statement about limited quantities and the man at customer service said they cannot price match things that have limited quantities. I asked to see it in writing and he provided a laminated sheet with the policy on it. He said they did not have a policy that I could take with me. After reviewing the ad more thoroughly, I showed him that the limited quantity asterick was not meant for the whole page just for a certain "free" deal. He looked at it again, apologized, and did the price match with no hassles. I also price matched the Clue game from the Kmart paper with no issues. He was very nice, but nervous. I think we just need to practice patience and tolerance as Target helps their employees learn how to price match effectively. And they need to provide a price matching policy for everyone, don't they? That way we won't be hasseling them to do things that they are not supposed to.

According to my Target, price matching is a new thing for them. What I was told to do is pay for the item full price(no coupons) at the register. Then, take your receipt and ad to customer service where they will adjust the price and deduct your coupons. It took a LONG time for them to figure this out....but, it does work...

I did it today but it was a nightmare! Actually I price matched Pictureka, the game (since my UP Blue Ray rang up at 19.99 I didn't have to price match it was lower than anyone elses) and because I used a coupon it would not return the proper amount of money to me since it showed the original price to be 23.99 less the $5 coupon. The girl had to do a return for the 18.99 and then ring it back up at 9.99 (which was Kmart's ad price less the $5 coupon). They did it but man it took forever. Love my Up deal though, they were out of the Monster's Inc BD so I only got the UP one less the $10 coupon it was only $10 and it included the journal.

Anon 6:04,
You stated, "In fact, these deals are so darn good that American jobs are being outsourced to support our lust for cheap goods".

I wouldn’t say “lust”. Personally, I’m on a very tight budget and therefore I have no choice but to be a frugal shopper. And there are many factors that contribute to outsourcing jobs overseas and I don’t think us couponers are at the top of the list. We could also bring up the fact that we live in a country that doesn’t have a standard living wage. In fact, the minimum wage sat dormant for several years while the cost of living continued to rise. Just recently over the summer it has gone up to a whopping $7.25. While many states have established their own minimum wages slightly above this, they still don’t compete with inflation. Maybe if the average working American could earn a more appropriate wage, we could afford to not look for “deals” and “cheap goods”. So perhaps we should look to our government officials and U.S. conglomerates when discussing the outsourcing of jobs overseas and why us average Americans “lust for cheap goods”. Just a thought.

For the earlier post on coupon fraud and taking advantage of the system...a good place to look is on "Google" do a search on coupon redemption and you will see how coupons are actually processed and how only a small percentage like 5% of those clipped coupons are ever used. The stores use these coupons to their advantage too! They know it will entice the buyer to shop there, and like most people that same buyer will inevitability forget the coupon at home, and go ahead and buy it anyway. We are a small percentage of the people that actually use them, and use them as they are intended.

After having read 126 comments ranging in content from the Up & Monsters DVD price-matching deal at Target to the ethics of couponing, I have pondered my own feelings on the ethical quandry some posters are experiencing. I too have felt greedy at times. As one person said, one must set their own boundaries, as no one is policing this arena. Perhaps the best policy is the Golden Rule, "do unto others as you woud have them do unto you."

In my store they had an "exclusive to Target" UP combo pack on sale for $19.99 tonight so I did not have to price match it. For both Monsters and Up I paid $10.98 before tax and my total after was $13.52.

Something else worth mentioning is that the guy at the Electronics Register just did the price match for me back there. I did not have to pay and then go to Customer Service to get my money refunded for the difference. It's always worth asking your cashier if they can just do it for you or just go to Customer Service to do the entire transaction with one person so nothing gets confused. I am so sorry that some of you are having such troubles with people giving you the run-around with this. If you find that one Target is giving you trouble and you have another one close enough to you it might be worth the drive to see if they are friendlier to you.

Once I got there, there was a peelie on Monsters for $10 off when you buy both...and they took all 4 coupons so $38 off! So $15.98! I think it was in my favor that they were super busy and the cashier wasn't really paying any attention. The $8 coupon beeped but I also didn't have the coupons together so she just rang it in!

I wanted to keep it for her memory box, but no. Kind of hit me hard. Other than that, it all depends on the cashier you get.

I had one Target tell me that I couldn't use a Target coupon & do a price match. I told her that this was not true, and she asked a manager. The manger said it was no problem, and let me do it. No other Target has ever complained about me price matching & using a Target coupon.

I do, however, have problems EVERY SINGLE TIME that I have ever price matched at Target. They always complain either because I go to the register first and tell me to go to customer service first, or else they complain that I went to customer service first & tell me to pay for the item first. They also argue if I try to match a Kroger ad, because you need "a card" for the sale prices.

Basically, Target is a jerk, but I still shop there to get good deals.

I price matched for the first time at my Target yesterday. I got the Pictureka Flipper game that was on sale at Kmart for $14.99. I then used the target $5 off coupon along with the $5 manufacturers coupon bringing my total down to just $5 and some change! The original price at targe was $23.99 so I saved about $19! I had not problem, I went to customer service, but the cashier did look at the coupons very carefully before scanning them.
Love this site Collin! Thank you!

Target has their "Low Price Promise" posted on their corporate website. According to the press release, their price matching policy is standard nationwide - interesting that corporate told you it was up to the individual store. Here is the link to the press release: http://pressroom.target.com/pr/news/value/our-low-price-promise-facts.aspx

Hope that helps! I'm bringing it with me along with their coupon policy.

On Tuesday, I price matched the Barbie 3 Musketeers as well as a Leap Frog Tag reading book from the Toys R Us catalog. The only thing I had to do differently is take those 2 items to Customer Service for the price match instead of handling the transaction at the checkout. I had them price match first and then I handed over my Target coupon and my Leap Frog coupon. No questions asked. It went off without a hitch. In fact the cashier said "I bet that makes your day". I truly did! Thanks so much for all your hard work...I am able to afford Christmas this year :o)

I have had problems with my color coupons (printed from my computer) scanning and the checker says they are not obligated to "make them work." Has anyone else experienced this?

Wow, the comments are sure interesting this morning!

Target's Black Friday ad has been posted online. There are quite a few things that will be on sale that Target currently has coupons for, especially in the games department. If the item is not a door buster, you can buy it within the 2 week price adjustment period, use the coupon because they don't expire until the 25th then bring your receipt back either on Black Friday or Saturday and get your price adjustment saving you even more. I have done this in the past, and they've never questioned it and It's saved me tons! They will not do it on door buster items though.

I went this week to my Target and price matched on the Barbie Movies, Guesstures, Clue Secret and Spies, and Tag books. On all of these I used Target coupons plus manufacturer coupons and the $5 off $50 toy coupons that had printed off for me previously. The register beeped on some of them, and she said she couldn't take it because the item wasn't there...after showing her it was here and her calling a manager they pushed the accept button and took them all!

Ugh. Coupons do not cause businesses to go into defecits. Stores make money each time a coupon is redeemed. If you look at the coupons it says that they are reimbursed the cost of the coupon plus 8 cents. No stores are "catching on" and it's not sneaky or criminal. Every coupon you turn in makes additional money for the store. In addition, having worked in a large retail chain, I know that stores work in concert with companies regarding which items they put on sale at what times based on coupon issuance. They do it expressly to make money.

My Target would have let me price match if I had the actual flyer. They would not accept the internet advertisement.

Good for you all that you can do price match.

I had hard time using two manufacture coupons (one $$ of an item and Buy one and get second one free for second item) when I buy two of the same items. After using both coupons, my total will be low but not even close to zero or overage. I was told I can buy 2 items, but can use either $$ off or BOGO coupon, but not both even though coupon is one per purchase. Also, they wouldn't adjust Target coupon to the price either when used alone(only one coupon) on an item which has price lower than coupon value. :(

I stop looking at Target deals. No luck for me.

I had a really great experience today at Target and just thought on a positive note I would post it. (especially since as we all know not all experiences are great) Yesterday I went and did the UP & Monsters Inc. deal in the excitement of the deal I completely forgot to price match I was so excited about the coupons and I did the wipes deal while there. I was actually happy with the deal that I rec. but just for kicks thought I would call my local target and tell them that I forgot to price match. My children had already opened and watched the movies so a return was not possible I talked to a really nice guy at customer service and he told me just to bring my receipt back in the store and he would give me a refund for the diff. I didn't get my hopes up as we know things vary from person to person. I was in town running other errands took my receipt in and the guy was there and HAPPILY refunded the price match. He actually knew what he was doing and only took a couple of mins. After having such a great experience I called the store manager later on and found out that this young guy was on a trial basis at the cs desk. Told the manager what a GREAT experience this was and he should have hime train ALL the other cs employees. So just a thought not only call for negative comments, but when you get a GREAT employee do call and share that too...The manager told me that this employee would definately be recognized for this today.

Collin, thank you for all that you do!!!

At my Target (Phoenix), you have to present the print ad in order for them to match. I too scored the 'exclusive' Up combo pack and was able to use all my coupons. good shopping day!

I went to the Target nearest to my house last night to try this deal. They were out of Monsters Inc, but had Up at the $19.99 price. I went to two different Targets today. Both of these were also out of Monsters Inc. They also had Up priced at $26.99. Does anyone know if the $19.99 price was a one day thing? I will be mad at myself for not buying Up yesterday since I didn't really need Monsters Inc.

I went to my target and all worked great. Thanks!!!

For the person who asked about the $19.99.. that is their unadvertized price. If you have them scan it they will tell you it is $19.99.

Has anyone been able to get TAG JR for real cheap?

Amber said...

Sure wish they had spell check... :-) Heheheh

...unadvertised price

Amber, I bought the Tag Jr at Target (FW, Texas) for $28.99. I used the $5.00 MQ from one of the magazines and the $10.00 TQ available from this site ("any" Tag it said). So, I was happy with $13.99. I also price matched the books, since TRU had them on sale $7.99, and had $3.00 of a book MQ. Hope this helps :)

Just did the Monsters/Up deal tonight w/o any issues! Up was priced at $19.99!

I tried the Up/monsters and I was told that they couldn't let me purchase on a rain check.. and they couldn't price match the Monster's because of it being contingent on another item in the flyer. I did, however, price match the Clue and the Pictureka. I got two board games, two small keychain toys/bracelets $2.99 each, and a LeapScout all for $28. I was happy. =) Not sure what to do about the movies though.. that was their last copy of UP. =S

I got my movies today after much hassle...the DH keeps forgetting to get my double paper Sunday morning, and I didn't have a chance to snag one anywhere else. Alas, they would not accept my online printout of the sale either so I DROVE over to the Best Buy and snatched a paper. After 45 mins wasted time and an overturned FRUTTI slurpee in my daughter's carseat, I got my movies! YEahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

The reason I went so out of my way was out of principle - I went to Target specifically for the movies and got roped in to buying my son the Thomas/Percy carnival track set (OK OK so he had several good potty training days), then went to the rack to find 50 billion copies of UP and no Monsters!! So I went searching the racks and was about to ask someone to check their stock when I saw an employee with a cart restocking some odds and ends, and yes, he had one copy of Monsters in there! So I had to leave the movies at CS in order to get the paper. When I came back a different girl was all revved up to tell me she couldn't price match the UP copy since it was a Target exclusive with the journal, and I said (knowing they had it cheaper at 19.99), Oh, OK well can I still match the Monsters price?...Umm yeah I think so. So she rings it all up and spends alot of time examining my coupons then gives me my $12.xx total HAHAHAH victory!!!

Also anyone looking for Thomas stuff this Christmas, the Spin and Fix Trackmaster set that's usually $50 is on temp price reduction to I believe $36.99, then you can also use the $5 TQ. Yay! going back for that later, sans boy.

All went well for me!! I only paid total $13.23 including tax! Cashier did ask me where I got all my great coupons and I told her about your website. I also gave her some exrax coupons so she could get movies for her son.

I price-matched three toys the other day using the ToysRus Toy Book at Target. I used a Target coupon, and a manufacturer coupon. I had no problem. I went up to the service desk and told them I wanted to price match. She said bring my items to the desk. I waited until she pricematched the three items, put the rest of my items I purchased. Then I handed her my coupons. No problem.

I hate Target!! They will NOT price match anything from CVS b/c it says "with card". According to their policy, "Target does not match coupon-required offers" and that's what CVS' deals are. I've talked to two managers at two stores and they both said the same thing. I'm just aggreivated. They have such good deals, but I don't even want to deal with the head-ache. Anyone else have that problem?
