Once again another fantastic Walgreens shopping trip. I was able to purchase 7 bonus packs of Colgate Total advanced Toothpaste, 13 Butterball Chicken broths, 3 Excedrin Menstrual Completes, 6 Glade Sense & Sprays, 2 Coffee-Mate Creamers (not pictured), 5 Trident gums, 3 packs of Glucerna bars and 1 Glucerna cereal for ONLY... $6.96 including tax. The tax alone was $6.57, so my total before tax was just .28! Final cost after all is said and done, FREE plus a $9+ Moneymaker!

Can you please explain to me how you manage to get all of this for a low price? For example, on my last trip to Walgreen's I tried to purchase the Excedrin menstruals. I had all of the correct coupons. I tried to purchase 2 on the same receipt. They would have been free after the coupons. I ended up having to do it in 2 transactions. They said it wouldn't work on the same transaction. Also, I tried to purchase the Sambucol cold medicine. Again I had the correct coupons, but the cashier and then the manager said that I couldn't use both of my coupons because they were both manufacturer's coupons. I said, no, this one is a Walgreen's coupon, and this one is a manufacturer's. She said they are both manufacturer's. I just wonder how you manage to get so much in one single transaction for such little money. I want to be able to achieve the same great deals!! Please advise me how.

Did you purchase all of these items in one single transaction?
thank you

I have to ask: how is it that all of these items are at your Walgreens, rather than being sold out, as they so frequently are at my own WAGS? It seems that the shelves are bare just as soon as the ads come out. . .do you get there at 6 a.m. on the morning of the sale?

Jessica,

First off, I have a wonderful coupon friendly cosmetics cashiers and that makes all the difference!

The cashier telling you that you can't purchase 2 Excedrins in the same transaction is totally wrong. When the coupon states one per purchase it means one coupon per item purchased, so if you purchase two Excedrins that two items purchased, so you should be able to use 2 manuf. coupons in one transaction.

Also with the Sambucol they should have let you use both coupons. One coupon (like you said) is a Walgreens coupon and the other is a manuf. coupon. Using manuf. coupons is the same as paying with cash, but a lot of cashiers and managers never seem to understand that!

Try to find a coupon friendly cashier. Shop at different Walgreens or if you only have one in you area, then try going at different times of the day until you find that coupon friendly cashier. Once you find a great cashier you will encounter very little problems.

I've been doing this for approx. 2-2 1/2 months. I'm getting so frustrated. I see you and others getting such spectacular deals and I just can't seem to do that!! I thought I was doing good this month and added up how much I've saved so far in march and its around $120, BUT.... I've spent a little over $100. I about had a cow when I added it up and hope my husband wont ask me!! I try to buy at least 3 papers every week for multiple coupons. This "saving" money deal is costing me more than I normally would spend. I love doing it, but we have more shampoo & toothpaste than ever before. Any advice???

Pamela,
Yes, I snagged all of these items in the same transaction!

Finally Frugal,

If you can beleive it, I actually just got back from Walgreens tonight and managed to snag all these items. I was surprised that nothing was out of stock on the last day of the sale.

I live in a military town and a lot of people actually don't coupon. It's kind of sad since were all on such a fixed income. I'm on a mission, though, to educate people on coupon use and how much money they can really save!

Oh and some store will allow you to put in a large order. If you know about a great upcoming sale you could always try and ask your Walgreens if they would order you extra products.

Were you able to use the two $10 off coupons and one $5 off for the cereal?

Anonymous,

When I first started couponing I felt the same way. I thought it was way to much work and I wasn't saving enough to make it worth it. Well, as you can probably tell... I now don't feel that way at all. Actually quite the opposite.

Couponing in a way is like learning to read. It takes some time, but once you get in the groove it will start becoming a lot easier and you'll also find out what works best for you.

Give yourself some time and I promise you will start seeing the money in your bank account grow! It's a very nice and rewarding feeling.

One of my big rules is to NOT buy things I don't need UNLESS I'm making money on them or getting them for FREE to donate or give to friends and family. Even if something is .25 I usually will not buy it if I know I won't use the product.

Jennifer,

I just used two $10 coupons. I purchased 3 Glucerna bar packs for $5.49 each and 1 package of cereal for $4.99. My total for those was $21.46, so my 2 $10 coupons went through without any beeps, since there was no overage involved.

Thank you, I think it's hard ( at first at least) to not get out of balance. This was so fun at first and now it's getting stressful , mostly since we don't have any extra money at all. I will keep at it and try not to buy something just because it has a r.r. or rebate attached to it. Thanks!!

Well, I thought I hit the lottery today because I found the .95 crest pro-health toothpastes but stupidly, I bought them all together. When I tried to return them today and buy them separately the manager YELLED at me and told me the RR wouldn't print and that I couldn't buy it blah blah.... I said well, let's try it. So of course the RR printed but he wouldn't let me buy any of the rest of the toothpastes I "returned"! Needless to say I was pretty upset! But I did get 4 deodorants for 0.28 so it's not all bad!

My Walgreens will not allow overage on coupons. I tried using the $1 Johnsons Body Care coupons on the 99cent bottles and they would not take them. The I went to another city and they took 4 coupons for 5 bottles. Then my sister went and got 6, they took all 6 of hers. Are they all set up to accept coupons a different way? It is very frustrating that they are not all the same. And my Walgreens would never have had that much stuff in stock, except for the toothpaste, for some reason they always have plenty of that!

Glucerna cereal at my wags is 5.99, so if I use 2 $10 qs to buy 4 boxes, can I pay by 2 RR? Can I buy any kind of glucerna cereal & do I have to pay tax? sorry for asking too many questions :D Thanks in advance!

Those are SUPER DEALS!, as for the cashiers not wanting to accept your coupons.... I read my coupons VERY carefully and always follow the rules. Last week I was told that I couldn't use the coupon for the Sambucol cold medicine and I simply asked why? She just looked at me and said, "Well, that would make it, like, free". If you really get a cashier who doesn't understand how the coupons work, ask for a more experience cashier or manager. This is what I do if people at stores will not follow their own rules. I have a small note book and I write down the name of the store, time, cashier, manager, and store address. I ask them specifically why I am not allowed to make my purchases and write that down as well. I usually ask for a copy of the voided register receipt, and if they say no, I write that down. Then I look to see if they have a name and number listed for a district manager. If not, I complain online. I used to work in retail. My mother was RiteAid manager. They have to follow the rules, but often, cashiers haven't received proper coupon training.

I was told today, that with the clearance Nutripal bars...can only use 1 Walgreen coupon (from coloring book 'per transaction')...for some reason "some' of the coupons in that book will only give the amount off 1 item. If you want the amount of a 2nd or 3rd item/etc., you'll have to split up the transaction. As long as they don't mind scanning the same Walgreens coupon for each...you'll get the discount.

This month, I've been able to use the Walgreens coloring book coupon on the Walgreens diapers or the Huggies diapers (also used manfu. on the Huggies deal). 1 store kept it so, I know now not to use those coupons there. 3 others let me reuse that Walgreens (coloring book) coupon over & over.

I did have a cashier insist I could only get 3 items/per the in-ad coupon (chxn broth). I asked couldn't she ring it up & see if the computer would take it(11 cans), she kept asking 'no'/limit is 3. I asked to speak with a manager but she insisted that they would say the same thing. I then decided that I would then return some of the items...& purchase them at another time with the $10 RR I wanted to use. The assistant manager went ahead & voided the transaction gave me the 3/$1 RR back. And started the transaction again. The system did let 11 cans go through for the sale price & I was able to use the $10 RR. A lot of trouble for chicken broth.

Most of the time, I'm pretty happy with my shopping experience at Walgreens. Prior to checking out I asked her, where a free after rebate item was...she was putting tags on the shelf. She told me to ask at the cosmetic counter. That is the 1st time I've had an employee not help me themself. After those 2 incidents I know now which sales clerk to avoid.

When using RR, how does that work? I tried to use 2 $10 for a $49 thermometer, but the cashier said I couldn't use more than 1 for only 1 item. After getting home, I wondered if I had added a pack of gum if I would have been able to use it then? Do you know?

Anonymous said...

Alisa,

I had the same thing happen. You can't have more maufacturer coupons that items. THat happened when I was buying Red Baron pizza's with a mfct coupon and a RR (the manager told me that RR are actualy mfct coupons, not walgreens coupons!) I just bought a pen for .34 and was on my way!

Shauna,
I think I would call Wags. corporate office and complain abut the manager that yelled at you. Get the managers name etc.. before calling. No store employee should EVER yell at a customer!! Whatever happened to the good old days when the customer is always right?!

Do the clerks at the makeup counter get a bonus if they sell a certain number of items? The other day I went in to get a specific type of sunscreen. The cashier tried REALLY hard to get me to buy the Walgreens brand sunscreen that was buy one get one free. That's not what I wanted. My son has sensitive skin and I wanted the other brand. She insisted that my husband and I needed the Wags. brand. I didn't buy it, but ended up feeling like she thought I was a nut for not buying it. She also wouldn't take a r.r. for my purchase saying that it wouldn't work. I was so frustrated by the time I left! This cashier has always been alright in the past.

Hip2Save said...

Alisa,

Like Anonymous said you can only have one manuf. coupon per item, so if you're trying to use an RR and already have a manuf. coupon for each item your purchasing, then you'll just have to add in an inexpensive "filler" item.

Hip2Save said...

Yes, the cosmetics cashiers do get extra commission if they sell certain items. I've found some to be a bit pushy, but for the most part I've also found that they're usually way more coupon friendly. I also like the fact that it's less crowded at the cosmetics counter.

One of my favorite cashier works at the cosmetics counter and sometimes I will ask her what she needs to sell. Usually if I have some moneymakers or leftover RRs I will purchase one of those items. It's kind of a nice way for me to say thanks... especially since she's so patient dealing with me and my stack of coupons!:)

I purchased the Garnier shampoo that was on sale for $2.99 and had a Walgreen's $2 coupon. I also had a manuf. coupon for $1. They didn't allow me to use the $1 coupon because of the overage. They said I couldn't use $1 coupon because I would have made money.

ah yes, i hope that your walgreens keep treating you right, i'm this close to quitting them all together, last night i went to do my shopping for this week and when i get to the register the cashier keeps saying he is confused and then go to talk to his manager about overage on clerance items then ajusts the coupon then looks at my next coupon in the stack and calls the manager and after talking about my transaction the manager tells me that he has to refuse it because i have to many coupons and that the sales are there to bring in customers to the store not so that i can get all of them!!!????????? what???????? sooo the sales are there to lure us in but we are not allowed to get them??? aaaarrag after spending about 45 minuters finding everything, pulling out my coupons and then 15 minutes for them to refuse my transaction i was and still is quite angry. I'm going to call and complain tomorrow when catalina is open, this was not just a waste of my time and gas but allso these items are no longer on sale and so i lost money that way, catalina has not been to helpfull before their answers has not been the same other people on here have reported getting, so depending how everything go once i call we'll see if i bother to go back. Sorry for the rant but it is just so frustrating.

what do you mean when you say you'll call "catalina"? I thought catalina was the name of the machines that printed out register reciepts ( although I never understood why they were called that). thanks
