Amazon: *HOT* Live Butterfly Garden Deal!

Since Christmas is just around the corner, I'm going to start highlighting online and in-store toy bargains! Sheila emailed about this great toy deal, so I thought I'd share.

Currently, Amazon has this Live Butterfly Garden on sale for $12.99--down from $24.99! This kit comes with a relatively easy-to-assemble observation chamber; supplies for feeding the butterflies (you provide only sugar and water); an informative booklet of clear instructions and butterfly facts; and a certificate for three to five free painted lady caterpillars!

What a cool idea! Your kiddos will actually be able to watch the metamorphosis from larva to butterfly which takes about three weeks. They can then release the butterflies after a few days of observation!

**This products also qualifies for Free Super Saver Shipping on $25 or more. I would suggest purchasing 2 to score FREE shipping!

(Thanks, Sheila!)

I would recommend this toy- my daughters got it for their bday and thought it was very cool! We watched the larvae turn into catepillars, then cocoons, then hatch into butterflys! It more geared towards ages 4+.

Thanks for posting these Christmas possible deals. I usually wait too late and don't have the money to buy everyone a nice gift. I'm staring early. I've already gotten two gifts from your posts....coffee deal and the snow white dvd.

Price already increasing...

I highly recommend this. It worked well...we had 7 butterflies hatch. Everytime my son sees a butterfly (now several years after the fact)he always thinks it is one of ours:)

Make sure the kids know you have to release the butterflies after about 2-3 weeks so they don't die in there. Mine were so disappointed. Thought they could keep them as pets.

If you are thinking of buying this, I would highly recommend that you do so. My four year old boy thought this was the coolest thing ever! It would also make a great "teacher" gift to be shared with your child's entire class. I plan to get one for my son's science teacher at his preschool.

A question for those who are familiar with this product...is it possible to purchase this now and keep it in the closet until Christmas? Will that affect it negatively in any way?

Hello Anonymous. With the kit comes a certificate that you send in for the larvae to be mailed to you. They are not included in the net container.

We've had this kit before - it was awesome and we really enjoyed the butterflies!

My daughter got this last year for Easter----I got it at Wal-Mart on clearance for $3 after Christmas---and it was GREAT fun! We even took it to school at each stage to let her kindergarten class witness the metamorphosis!

the butterfly eggs are around $3. you can re-purchase them every year.

These are fun for the whole family. A lot of times the stores have them for $9.99 (usually spring time)or even lower during mark downs at Target---I bought a couple of sets for around $4ea last year.

I got this for my 6 year old last Christmas and as a family we loved it. One thing you may want to keep in mind is that you do have to pay an additional fee when you send off for your larvae, I think around $5.00.

I got a similar one for my nieces last year (I had to pay a couple of bucks shipping for the larvae). They are 5 & 7.

They loved watching the metamorphosis and setting the butterflies free a few days after they emerged. This is a fun and educational gift for any young girl or boy.

I am thinking of ordering more larvae this Christmas, since they already have the habitat.

To the person who was wondering if you can store it, I'm pretty sure that ALL of these habitats come with a card you send in to get the larvae when you are ready for them. Once you send for the larvae, you should be ready to hatch them, but you can store the gift for as long as you want beforehand. I didn't send for the larvae until a couple of weeks after Christmas so it wouldn't be too cold when they hatched to release them (we live in Florida).

BUT WAIT.... This just came up on the Kids Woot for today at %4.99 plus $5 shipping and handling. Order 3 and it is still only $5 S&H.... http://kids.woot.com/
You will need to go through this after receiving your Butterfly Garden but if you order more for one S&H fee, it would be an even better deal. Note: There is a $3.00 shipping and handling charge for caterpillars and food. Caterpillars can only be shipped within the Continental USA. They cannot be shipped to Hawaii, Mexico, or Canada
Mail-in butterfly coupon/envelope included to send away for 3 to 5 butterfly larvae

BUT once Woot sells out, it's all over! And this should be at least $3.00 less per kit.

You have to mail away for the larvae so yes you can put this away. I got one at TRU last year for about $15 and ours broke the first time we tried to use it. Never even got to send away for the larvae.

check out the website http://kids.woot.com/ or www.woot.com
They have 1 day specials with a flat $5 shipping.
The kid's woot has the live butterfly garden for $5 and with $5 shipping makes it just $10. Check it out.

InsectLore 1-800-548-3284 told me, after the 1st certificate for larvae it was $14.95 for additional larvae certificate.

I made a suggestion that it be less than that, if I'm reusing the kit.

If everyone makes the suggestion, maybe they will come down on the price for additional certificates.

Also, thank you to those mentioning kids.woot

kids.woot is now all out of the butterfly gardens =( It is early Thursday afternoon, Oct. 8th.

I found this informative article about the 'painted ladies', the buttefly that is viewed in the Butterfly Garden Kit by Insect Lore.

http://www.registrationsite.org/butterflies/raisingpaintedladies.pdf

they also recommended this source as a place for larvae & supplies.
www.carolina.com They have larvae on sale for $6.95 right now, I do not know if there is an extra charge for shipping.

Just as another idea, it is super easy to plant a butterfly garden. All you need to do is plant milkweed and the butterflies will come and lay tons of eggs! We have a whole bunch of caterpillars that we are raising right now from our plants! Then you don't have to keep buying more larve.
